When
your dentist says you need a root canal, that's actually good news. It
means your tooth can be saved, instead of requiring extraction. Root
canal therapy is indicated when the nerve inside the tooth has become
damaged due to deep decay, fracture or trauma to the tooth. Any of these
conditions can allow bacteria to enter into the pulp of the tooth, where
the nerve is encased. That often results in pain due to increased
pressure within the tooth. Root canal therapy provides relief of that
pain and pressure. The dentist will clean out the diseased pulp of the
tooth and medicate the canals, and then fill the tooth with a
biocompatible material resembling the tooth’s pulp, and finally
permanently seal the tooth.
The procedure is not painful, as you may have heard. The tooth is
numbed so you won't feel any pain, and there is little discomfort
afterwards.
Treating the root canal is the way to save the entire tooth. The other
alternative is to pull the tooth entirely. However, leaving that space
empty may create other problems, like making chewing and biting more
difficult. Teeth may also shift their position if missing teeth are not
there to hold the space. Extracting the tooth can be less healthy
and more expensive in the long run.
